An architectural feast for the eyes

Zumtobel lighting solution stages the façade of the new McDonald’s in Lustenau
Baumschlager Eberle have created an architectural eye-catcher with the unusual design for the new McDonald’s in Lustenau. The adaptable SUPERSYSTEM outdoor LED luminaire from Zumtobel was chosen to stage the fascinating façade: a lighting tool that can be used to model light, making the architect’s vision an experience even at night, transporting the image of a brand.
    More informationLess information
McDonald’s Austria is resolutely pursuing a strategy of modernisation that should also be reflected in the architecture of the restaurants. The new McDonald’s in Lustenau, which was opened on 23 November 2016, implements this ambition in every respect. What’s more, the building is located at a visually prominent location, on the road leading into Lustenau at the crossroads of Dornbirner Straße and Sägerstraße. For traffic coming from Switzerland, this is a key location that marks the entrance to Austria and to the Milleniumpark Lustenau. With this in mind, the task was to give the building a special look that did justice to this strategic location. The renowned architects from Lustenau, Baumschlager Eberle, have succeeded in designing an impressive architectural eye-catcher that blends in with the space of the overall site.

From afar, the upper part of the building already develops its dramatic effect with a wave-like crown. During the day, the striking silhouette plays with the sunlight. If the sky is overcast, in the evening and at night, the right setting is created by a bespoke lighting solution from Zumtobel. The decorative street and city light Urba from the affiliated Thorn brand within the Zumtobel Group was used for the car park and pathway lighting. The lighting is hereby geared to nature's example and emulates the sunlight’s effects. Depending on the time of day and the relevant lighting situation, the gold-coloured, wave-shaped façade changes its appearance to constantly surprise the viewer. This lighting’s task is to support the play of the waves with contrast and shade and therefore create a sculptural effect. SUPERSYSTEM outdoor takes care of the subtle highlighting of the façade, whereby only the golden crown glows and the lower part withdraws into darkness. A total of 108 LED light tubes distributed over four  » SUPERSYSTEM outdoor accent pillars have been positioned to diagonally illuminate the façade at an angle. Each of the 108 light tubes has been individually aligned to the special structure of the horizontal waves so that viewers can experience the effect of this unusual architecture in the best possible way.

VR study to investigate the emotional effect of outdoor lighting scenes

The Ludwigsplatz in Darmstadt is the test object of Zumtobel’s latest outdoor lighting study, whose results will be published in early 2017. Encouraged by good experiences in the past, the virtual reality technology has been preferred for this trial.
    More informationLess information
On account of the focus of his work, a suitable trial partner was found in the person of Professor Roland Greule from the University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg. He heads up the Faculty of Design, Media and Information and is an expert for lighting design and virtual systems.

The initial impulse for the study of the Ludwigsplatz came from the long-standing cooperation with the Technical University in Darmstadt. The architecture students’ workshop task of creating a lighting design for this central square using very concrete and creative light planning approaches is reflected in the study. The best lighting scenes to enliven the somewhat dreary-looking Ludwigsplatz were handed over to Professor Greule. They are now an integral part of the visualisations in various grades of representation, ranging from classic light calculation programmes right through to VR technology. This should also allow for an evaluation of any additional value that may be achieved through the new, more complex technological possibilities. The emotional evaluation as well as people’s orientation based on different night lighting scenes were recorded with the help of the psychologist and lighting planner, Torsten Braun.

There were aggravating influencing parameters to the investigation of the real, urban space, such as the weather or the frequentations levels of the space. The VR laboratory study offers a number of advantages here, but then again the external validity suffers. A subsequent study of the real space is planned to address this issue.

If the VR study focusing on the evaluation of lighting scenes in the context of architecture produces some convincing results, new fields can be developed for the future uses of VR in the lighting industry, for example, digital light showrooms.

Active Light: How light contributes to well-being in the office

A subtle blend of natural and artificial light improves wellbeing and encourages creativity
In many countries today people spend around 80 percent of the day indoors where their access to natural daylight is limited. The challenge today is to provide greater access to natural dynamic light that our bodies are used to.
    More informationLess information
If lighting in the office is seen as a holistic lighting ecosystem, it is able to provide well-being for the employees and promote creativity. Optimal lighting is just as essential for the health, motivation and performance as it is for the accomplishment of the respective work task.

The MELLOW LIGHT sixth generation – MELLOW LIGHT evolution and infinity

MELLOW LIGHT is an icon of office lighting. The sixth generation of the luminaire will be launched on the market this autumn.
    More informationLess information
While its harmonious appearance still remains unmistakable, Daniel Stromborg, of the architecture and design office Gensler, has succeeded in rejuvenating its design. While the “wings” of the luminaire are responsible for creating ambient light, the centre part creates the task light for the work space.

The needs of the person were the focus for the product development and are continued in the application, MELLOW LIGHT provides the possibility to increase the average illuminance to 800 lux to provide an individual with more light. As every person has individual lighting needs to fulfil their tasks in the office, MELLOW LIGHT infinity enables the separate switching of ambient and task lighting so the user can adjust the optimal lighting level.

In a series of articles at lightlive.com, you learn that MELLOW LIGHT as an intelligent lighting solution offers far more than another office luminaire. The history of MELLOW LIGHT is also explained and the design process is also explained in a detailed interview with the designer Daniel Stromborg.

Straightness and transparency in the new Sky offices

The newly completed Sky Offices in London are a stunning suite of spaces featuring a contemporary elegant aesthetic and a palette of light natural materials and sliding glazed partitions. The suite, designed by Arup Associates, provides individual office spaces together with a content demonstration area, open plan team touch down space and meeting rooms.

The Zumtobel SLOTLIGHT infinity recessed lighting contributes greatly to the design, as the glowing lines of light create a dynamic sense of perspective, spatial generosity and unified space, while drawing out the strong lines in the architecture.
    More informationLess information
Architect Nick Williams of Arup Associates elaborates: “The ceiling is a very dominant feature given the proportions of the space, therefore the design of the ceiling was very important. The Client expressed a preference from the outset for an innovative ceiling solution.”

As lead lighting designer to the project, Arup’s lighting group worked closely with the architecture team to develop the concept.

Lighting Designer Nick MacLiammoir: “As it was a key part of the vision to provide a high degree of transparency between the various spaces and rooms, continuity in lighting and luminaire appearance combined with a cohesive overall arrangement was important to create sense of a unity.”

This led to the idea of using seamless runs of diffuse linear light. With the proposed run lengths of up to 29 metres through the space, any inconsistencies in the lit effect or joins in the diffuser would be obvious, so a perfectly even, single piece, continuous diffuser was critical to the success of the project.

Arup had played a key role in the product development of the SLOTLIGHT infinity in collaboration with Zumtobel Lighting. It had been shown to lead architect Nick Williams, who could immediately see how it would be ideal for the Sky project. As the world’s first continuous light line, the product can be installed in up to 20 metre lengths as standard, without jointing, interruption, or any of the dark spots traditionally associated with light lines. Its length is specifiable to within 250mm, and can be extended - as in the case of the Sky project, which features two 29-metre lengths.

Having decided on the concept, the team worked in close collaboration to design the setting out. This was an iterative process, taking into consideration the desired aesthetic affect and technical requirements as well as coordinating the integration with services - all of which was conducted on a short timeframe. The luminaires are precisely centered over key content displays to focus attention, and terminate tight to the walls to fully express the ceiling plane.

As the office design features a series of glazed partitions, and contains flat screen monitors, reflection studies were also required to inform the positioning of the lines. The SLOTLIGHT infinity is available with a choice of four diffuser types – including one designed specifically for office use with a specially engineered distribution profile that achieves a glare rating of UGR < 19, in compliance with EN12464: 2011. The availability of this profile was crucial to achieving the effect without creating disturbing glare that would affect the occupants.

Nick MacLiammoir: “We selected the SLOTLIGHT infinity as it was the only solution that could meet the aesthetic requirements for a supremely consistent effect across such distances, thanks to its revolutionary ‘diffuser on a roll’, while also meeting the requirements for glare limitation. The simplicity of the plaster in frame also helped to ensure the lines would be installed with the exacting level of finish and attention to detail required in this prestigious project."

The SLOTLIGHT system installed incorporates eBox, a centralised emergency power supply that eliminates the need for Nickel Cadmium batteries. As well as being a solution that is less harmful to the environment, eBox allows easy reporting on the status of the emergency luminaires removing the requirement for facility management to spend time on testing. It also simplifies installation, as well as keeping the size of the profile to a minimum.

The result is a truly striking project that has been well received by its occupants. The skillful application of SLOTLIGHT infinity linear lighting has allowed it to become an integral part of the architecture. The carefully placed lines visually connect the spaces and emphasise the flow between them to create the unique look and feel, while simultaneously fulfilling the client’s functional requirements.

Zumtobel Project Director Matt House comments: “When I was first told about the requirements for the lighting, I immediately knew that the SLOTLIGHT infinity was the product to give Sky the look they wanted, as well as the required performance for office lighting. Seeing it installed clearly demonstrates how the SLOTLIGHT infinity has enabled Sky and the Arup team to deliver their vision for the lighting of the space.”

Restored Musée Rodin in Paris gets a sophisticated lighting solution

The sculptor’s works at the completely restored museum are presented in such a way that it enables the greater public to gain a better understanding of the history, methods and techniques of Auguste Rodin.
    More informationLess information
The lighting concept developed by Stéphanie Daniel focuses on effectively emphasising the sculptures. At the start of the project, the lighting designer planned to set artificial light against natural light, but a few obstacles made this approach difficult. Initial tests revealed that every single luminaire would have to be programmed individually in order to emphasise bronze and plaster sculptures in the same room in a suitable way.

In addition to the low installation depth, a further challenge was posed by the special axial dimension of 1.43 metres, so the design requirements for the lighting concept combined with the structural specifications could not be answered with a standard solution.

The Zumtobel project team developed a customised luminaire in a short space of time in close collaboration with the Theiss architects which was derived from the recessed version of MIREL evolution. Architects and users alike were convinced by its low installation height, excellent system efficiency and high light quality.

Best Light for Offices – Designing for well-being in office spaces

Over centuries, people have evolved with the dynamics of natural light. Sunlight is responsible for our internal and external sense of time. It sets our bio-rhythm and in turn, governs the vital processes within our body. The single most outstanding characteristic of natural light is that it is dynamic. It changes colour temperature and intensity over the day. Now we bring the dynamics of sunlight indoors – into the office space.
    More informationLess information
    Right Light in Time
Modern working life means that people can spend up to 80% of their day indoors, in artificial lighting. Several studies have shown that people working indoors, in office spaces, prefer dynamic lighting conditions,1 like to have individual control over their lighting situation and want more light compared to the norms.2 Furthermore, studies have shown that perceived good lighting in offices can reduce employee sick days by 2 days per person, per year3 and improve employee productivity by up to 4%!4 Coupled with the fact that employees make up about 80-90% of the costs in a typical business, it goes without saying that the well-being and comfort of employees and a working environment that supports them is no longer a luxury – it is a necessity!

    Right Light In Time

Lighting has been identified as a key factor that can enhance the well-being of persons in office environments. Designing lighting solutions for people is at the heart of Human Centric Lighting - providing the right light, in the right amount, at the right time. TunableWhite-technology makes it possible to mimic the dynamics of sunlight, indoors. This means providing cooler white colours in the morning and afternoon, changing to warmer white in the evening and night in order to support the bio-rhythm of people. Additionally, timelines included in lighting controls makes this change automatic and inherent to the lighting solution. It was customary to use cool white light to keep persons alert in a working environment, for e.g. during late night shift work. However, improved ‘shift working’ timelines can be employed, that complement the bio-rhythm instead of modifying it. This ensures that people can have a restful sleep after their shift is finished.5

    Right Light for Task
Imagine a meeting room where the lights automatically dim when a presenter starts giving a talk, where a wall washer illuminates a brainstorming wall when you need it or lights that seamlessly create perfect ambience for a meeting around a desk. Autonomous lighting solutions intuitively and automatically react to provide the optimal light. Intelligent sensors and lighting controls make it possible to adjust the light automatically depending on the task at hand. Not only does this ensure a comfortable working environment but it also ensures that the light levels are optimal and energy savings are considered by providing the right amount of light at the place where it is most needed.

    Right Light for Task

    Right Light for You
We are all individuals with our own preferences. Lighting preferences vary depending on age, gender, chronotype, working times and various other factors. In general, studies have shown that people prefer to control their own lighting situation and prefer more light compared to the norms. As such, simple and easy to use lighting controls are essential to make the experience a pleasant one. Lighting controls make it possible to personalize the light in individual task areas, be it a private office or individual desk in a team space. An easy to use interface equipped with ‘scenes’ can be used to quickly select a lighting situation depending on the task. Scenes can also be customized or created based on the needs of the user.
The best light for offices goes beyond just the luminaire, encompassing an eco-system of luminaires, intelligent sensors, coupled with lighting controls and even going beyond lighting – into the Internet-of-Things realm –  to ensure the most congenial and comfortable environment that enhances the well-being of people.

This is what you can expect at Light + Building

At Light + Building 2016, taking place between 13 and 18 March in Frankfurt, we'll show you our product highlights and future-orientated lighting concepts, which provide the right lighting solution for every person day and night.

The right light in the morning enables getting up, increases comfort at the workplace, turns shopping into an experience, stages works of art, provides orientation and safety in the dark and encourages peace and quiet in the evening. This lighting flexibility is only possible by combining lighting and intelligent control, as well as the appropriate service range. In addition to extending the portfolio for private living areas, Zumtobel is also setting new milestones with innovative products in architectonic and urban exterior lighting.

Over a space of around 340 m², Zumtobel will present its entire range of intelligent lighting solutions in hall 2.0, booth B30/31. Through the course of the day, the areas of application living, office and communication, industry and engineering, presentation and retail, art and culture and exterior lighting will be arranged in a clockwise direction.

    •    Living: With Zumtobel, light becomes the metronome for your body clock. Thanks to extending the portfolio to living area, Zumtobel lighting solutions accompany people through the entire day. The perfected product portfolio provides the opportunity to fully integrate lighting into architecture, thus creating unique lighting scenes and scenarios even in private living spaces.

    •    Office and communication: The individual needs of people are at the centre of office lighting, as is reducing operating costs. Depending on the daylight, innovative, sensor-controlled luminaires provide the optimal extension of artificial light for individual work tasks and encourages the worker to feel comfortable. Thanks to tunableWhite technology, the colour temperature can be regulated so that light is activated in the morning and is more sedate in the evening. Motion detectors provide additional efficiency by automatically dimming the lights when no one is around.

    •    Industry and engineering: In an industrial setting, lights are specifically used to reduced operating costs and support people carrying out complex tasks. Zumtobel tackles the challenge of combining efficiency and optimal light intensity with the ATIVO sensor. Whether storage, production or open area, ATIVO recognises the area's workload and, in combination with the light management system, can thus provide the optimal illuminance for every area.

    •    Presentation and retail: With a target group-specific light concept, revenue at the PoS can increase by up to 10%. This was revealed by the field test for the laboratory study for Limbic® Lighting. Zumtobel clearly presents the latest insights and background.

    •    Art and Culture: Using daylight efficiently, creating ambience, emphasising features – light in the area of art and culture diversely lights up works of art and is gentle and efficient at the same time. In doing so, the right combination of general lighting, accent lighting and additional wallwashers are crucial. Based on selected lighting tools, such as SUPERSYSTEM, Zumtobel displays the important aspects for conservational lighting and art productions.

    •    Outdoor lighting: This new segment of the Zumtobel product portfolio creates new possibilities for task-specific illumination of paths, squares, streets and façades. The portfolio makes planning a consistent light solution possible for light planners and architects. Therefore, SUPERSYSTEM outdoor enables targeted lighting and settings in outdoor areas. Furthermore, with the innovative lighting tool NIGHTSIGHT, technically sophisticated and formal consistent lighting solutions can be implemented for the first time.

    •    Services: The Zumtobel Group extends their portfolio with the appropriate range of service. At Light + Building, the group will give an overview of its services, such as the NOW! service range which provides customers with a ready to use light solution that includes a complete, worry-free package. Furthermore, possibilities for networked lighting in the age of "Internet of Things" will be demonstrated.

The wood-panelled concert auditorium has been designed so that the curved walls and cavities behind these produce outstanding acoustics.

The lighting solution from Zumtobel on the one hand sets off the architecture perfectly, and on the other it satisfies the various requirements arising from the hall's use for both art exhibitions and concerts. "Zumtobel has drawn on its many years of experience from cultural projects throughout the world. This know-how and the professional approach made a valuable contribution to a project with which we ourselves broke new ground," says Florian Werner, the owner and Managing Director of the arlberg1800 RESORT. As the owner, Florian Werner had to face up to a whole new challenge with a cultural building. He placed great store in a perfect technical and aesthetic implementation when realizing his vision. When it came to the lighting concept, a customized LED lighting solution was realised for the different rooms and areas.

Special luminaires for a bespoke LED lighting solution
A special luminare was developed for the art gallery: warm-white, bright LED light lines, with a cold-white light wave running through the floor and ceiling, emphasise the effect of the nine metre high room and highlight its use of materials. The VIVO LED spotlight system proves its flexibility for direct lighting in the art gallery and other rooms. The precise and even light distribution as well as the excellent colour rendering are ideal to spotlight works of art in exhibitions, though also allow work with lighting effects during concerts and events. Whereas more functional luminaires ensure orientation and a pleasant atmosphere in the foyer and aisles, the decorative pendant luminaire SCONFINE as designed by Matteo Thun plays with the effect created by shape, light and space in the bar area.
